Madrid erupts as Spain reach World Cup final - The Daily Tribunal

Spain erupted in celebration after the national football team secured a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final with a commanding 2-0 victory over France, sparking jubilant scenes across Madrid and other cities.

Thousands of supporters gathered at Madrid’s Plaza de Colon fan zone and surrounding streets to watch the semi-final, with loud cheers, chants and car horns echoing through the capital after the final whistle. Fans waved Spanish flags, wore national team jerseys and celebrated late into the night as Spain moved within one win of claiming a second World Cup title.

Many supporters expressed confidence in the team’s ability to overcome one of the tournament favourites. Several fans praised Spain’s disciplined performance, saying the squad’s teamwork and tactical approach proved stronger than France’s star-studded lineup.

The semi-final, played in Arlington, Texas, saw Spain dominate possession and limit the influence of France’s attacking stars, including Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele. Goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro sealed the victory and booked Spain’s place in Sunday’s final in New Jersey.

Before the match, some supporters admitted they were concerned about France’s attacking quality but believed Spain’s recent record against the French side would boost confidence. Spain had previously defeated France in Euro 2024 and the UEFA Nations League, adding to optimism among fans.

Young winger Lamine Yamal also attracted attention after returning from injury. The teenager played a key role by winning the penalty that led to Spain’s opening goal, further strengthening belief in the team’s depth and future.

As celebrations continued across Madrid, supporters said the achievement had united the country and created memories similar to Spain’s historic 2010 World Cup triumph. Many now hope the national team can complete its remarkable campaign by lifting the trophy in the final, where it will face the winner of the other semi-final between England and Argentina.
