Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Passes Resolution for Interim Provincial Status

Published on: July 16, 2026 11:53 PM

Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly

The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly has passed a resolution calling for Gilgit-Baltistan Interim Province status within Pakistan. The resolution states that granting interim provincial status should not affect Pakistan’s long-standing position on the Kashmir dispute or any future UN-mandated plebiscite.

The resolution proposes that Gilgit-Baltistan be given representation in Pakistan’s National Assembly, Senate, and all constitutional institutions. It aims to provide the region’s residents with constitutional and democratic rights equal to those enjoyed by citizens of the country’s other provinces.

Lawmakers also urged the federal government to take all necessary constitutional, legal, and administrative steps to implement the resolution. According to the proposal, the process should be carried out in accordance with Pakistan’s legal framework and international obligations.

The resolution clearly states that making Gilgit-Baltistan an interim province will not alter Pakistan’s official position on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute. It emphasizes that the region’s interim status should have no impact on any future plebiscite related to Kashmir.

The Assembly further recommended immediate action to ensure equal constitutional, political, and democratic rights for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan. The Gilgit-Baltistan Interim Province resolution marks a significant political development regarding the constitutional status of the region within Pakistan.
