Petroleum prices likely to rise in next review

Petroleum prices in Pakistan are expected to increase significantly in the upcoming fortnightly review, with high-speed diesel (HSD) likely to become up to Rs40 per litre more expensive and petrol projected to rise by around Rs10 per litre.

The anticipated increase is linked to higher international crude oil prices following the renewed conflict between the United States and Iran, which has disrupted global energy markets and pushed oil prices upward.

According to preliminary estimates based on the first four days of Platts pricing assessments, HSD is expected to record the sharpest increase. However, the final price adjustment will depend on international market trends over the remaining assessment period before the government announces revised prices.

Officials said the government is considering reducing the petroleum levy to partially offset the impact of higher global prices and provide some relief to consumers.

Meanwhile, concerns have emerged over fuel supply disruptions in parts of the country, with reports suggesting that some dealers have begun hoarding diesel in anticipation of higher prices. The practice has reportedly caused temporary shortages at several filling stations despite authorities maintaining that national fuel stocks remain sufficient.

The issue was reviewed during a meeting of the National Committee on Monitoring and Coordination (NCMC), attended by representatives of the Oil Companies Advisory Council (OCAC), the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) and other stakeholders.

Officials noted that petroleum sales during the first half of July increased well above normal consumption levels, indicating possible stockpiling rather than genuine demand. Ogra also linked the unusual sales pattern to speculative buying by dealers expecting a major price increase.

The committee directed Ogra to intensify market monitoring and enforcement against hoarding, while provincial governments were instructed to inspect fuel stations and take action against anyone creating artificial shortages.

Authorities reiterated that Pakistan has adequate petroleum inventories and urged the public to avoid panic buying as officials work to ensure uninterrupted fuel supplies nationwide.
